What is Waycross Main Street?
Simply put, MAIN STREET is a program to encourage the economic improvement and physical renovation of downtown. The MAIN STREET approach builds on the idea of the downtown’s total image, not simply on a “facelift” for buildings. Waycross MAIN STREET is a part of the national and state MAIN STREET programs in 40 states and more then 1,000 cities. Waycross is one of the six original MAIN STREET cities.
MAIN STREET works on a four-point approach to downtown revitalization:
- Organization: Coordinating individual groups to work together effectively in the downtown area: bankers, city government, merchants, property owners, chamber of commerce, civic groups and individual citizens.
- Promotion: Promoting and advertising the downtown as an exciting community center, a meeting place filled with activity, lively stores and quality service.
- Design: Enhancing the visual quality of the downtown: buildings, signs, window displays, landscaping and environment, people, places and physical elements.
- Economic Restructuring: Diversifying the downtown economy — filling gaps by recruiting new stores to provide a balanced retail mix, converting unused space into living quarters or offices and creating an environment in which investment will thrive.
As you can see, much of MAIN STREET’s focus is on intangibles: ideas, attitudes and economic opportunities. Successful renovation requires much more than just attention to a building’s physical appearance. A positive perception by the people who use downtown must be continually renewed. WAYCROSS MAIN STREET is the non-profit organization whose primary focus is the preservation of downtown.
